X Government ID

X, formerly Twitter, has launched government ID-based account verification for paid users in numerous countries, except for the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and the United Kingdom.

The purpose of the verification is to prevent impersonation and spam, and to give verified users benefits such as prioritized support.

Verified users will have a note on their profile page that says their government ID was verified. They may also be able to make frequent changes to their names, usernames, or profile photos without losing the checkmark.

X said that it plans to expedite the review process for checkmarks if a user verifies their IDs.

The company is currently offering ID-based verification for paid users only, but it may offer it to all users in the future. The ID verification is done by Au10tix, an Israel-based identity verification company.

X's support page for verification says that the company may use the ID data to age-gate content.

It is not clear what "prioritized support" means, but it could mean that verified users will get faster responses from X's customer support team.

Overall, the new ID-based verification system is a step in the right direction for X. It will help to prevent impersonation and spam, and it will give verified users some benefits. However, it is important to note that the system is currently only available for paid users, and it is not clear what all of the benefits of verification will be.
